Personally, I'm anti-Kindle, I prefer a more open standard ebook reader. Mind you, I'm not that much of a fan of the iPad either, it's just less limiting than the Kindle.
I thought the same thing re: the bezel. We'll see when it lands.

My eyes definitely feel tired at the end of the day after staring at glowing screens. The Kindle is always a nice switch from them at night / when my eyes start feeling too tired.

(That said, I really did love my Kindle and overlooked the shortcomings. My biggest fear re the iPad will be the eyestrain issue. I do stare at a computer screen and a lot of text all day, though, so perhaps such fears are overblown.)

Interesting point. I figured the touch screen/grip issue is one reason for the border around the screen, which some design experts clucked at. I just tried the behavior you described in the Kindle and Stanza iPhone apps. Kindle doesn't do anything, though a hard tap will turn the page. Stanza seems to give you options to select, cut and paste. Maybe that would distract, or not. But it seems like you could touch a page on a screen in a casual way without a problem; it's a pretty firm tap to turn the page in both apps.

One of the things that I love about my Kindle is that I can grab it by the screen, the same way I hold a magazine or newspaper, running my finger underneath a particularly interesting bit of reading or sticking my thumb on the screen when I get up from my poolside seat. To a certain degree, the touch-ability of the screen on the iPad is a step towards something more foreign, in this regard.

I still want an iPad (eventually), but I think I'll keep my Kindle 2 too.
