Podcast Zeitgeist, Dec. 26

December 26, 2008

The mix this week is more culture than tech. Most of the podcasts I sample were off for the holidays, or they had recorded episodes in advance, so I went a little farther afield. [See all lists.]

Patrick, thanks so much for checking out and reviewing Books on the Nightstand. It was a pleasant surprise to see your blog come up in my Google Alerts this morning. I love the idea of Podcast Zeitgeist, and I will be subscribing.

I respect your impression of us as “not particularly deep or compelling”. We will try to work on compelling (any specific suggestions?). As far as “deep” — I’m going to take this as a reminder that we need to tinker with our intro a bit for new listeners. Our primary aim is to provide book recommendations with an insiders perspective (we both work for a major publisher as our day jobs). We always assume that our listeners have not read the books we are talking about, so we stay very far away from important plot points or events that would spoil the book. To achieve that and to stay within our 20-25 minute time frame, it’s hard to get too deep. :) ]

Also, I just want to clarify something, since I’m sure some of your readers will pick up on this: Life Class and Firmin were not presented as sci-fi books for readers who don’t like science fiction. They were actually choices in our 3rd segment, “Two Books we Can’t Wait for your to Read”, which appears in every episode. These are our picks for two titles that will be published in the next few weeks from episode date. Our segments are typically separated by a bit of music to designate a change of topics. Maybe we should revisit the clarity there as well.

Thanks again for your very thoughtful review. It gives us some things to take into consideration. I hope you give us another listen sometime. Thanks!

    Ann

      Ann,

Thanks for your comment. I should have been clearer that the two books you mentioned were not part of the science fiction segment; I’ve tweaked that. Thanks for the explanation of the premise of the show. Your show is a quick, clear and entertaining presentation and might be exactly what some people are looking for in a book show.

Thanks for the return and the comment on my podcast. I just posted our 2008 in review part 1. I’ll post part 2 on Wednesday. I usually post a new podcast on Saturday and Wednesday as long as they are plentiful.
